Quick Debt Management Tips
Not sure where to get started organizing your finances? Here's some quick tips and advice for getting back on track.
Start by organizing your finances. Figure out how much money is coming in, how much money is going out each month, and where it's going. This is a task most people avoid while in debt, but ignoring your budget won't make it any easier if you're not able to cover your bills every month, and that's one of the main ways people get in debt in the first place. Keep track of your monthly expenses, write them down and keep updating the list. Are there non-essentials purchases you can remove? Are you over spending on something specific? Writing everything on paper can assist in showing you the overall picture when it comes to your finances and you can then make appropriate decisions.
Learn To Save Up A Little
It can be very hard to save money when you're in debt, but try to stash away a little each paycheck if possible. A bit of money saved for a
rainy day can help you avoid taking on high-interest loans or using credit cards when things get tight. Better safe then sorry.
Consolidate High Interest Debt
Each loan payment you make is made up of two parts, the principal on the debt and the interest you pay on the loan.
If you're making partial payments instead of paying off the balance completely each month, you're paying interest. If you're making minimum payments
on high-interest loan(s), you're usually paying way too much interest.
If you elect to consolidate, take the money saved and use it to pay down your debt. Because you'll be paying less interest, a consolidation loan will let you pay off the principal much quicker; even if you're paying the same amount each month.
Clean Up Any problems On Your Credit Report
Sometimes after getting rid of your debts there could still be inaccuracies on your credit report, which will keep affecting your credit until
you resolve it. You have a right to look at your credit report, and can easily fix any mistakes once identified.
Avoid Taking On New Credit
After your debts have been cleaned up, make sure it stays that way. With a better credit record and your debts managed, it can be tempting to
accept more credit. If you don't require credit, don't accept it. Applying for many credit cards can look bad on your credit report. So get
one or two and stick with them.
